Signs a Concrete Floor Needs Repair Before Coating

Before a coating system is applied, the existing slab should be inspected. Several signs indicate the concrete needs repair first.

Visible cracks, chips, and pitting are the most obvious. Spalling — where the surface flakes or scales away — signals weak surface material that grinding and repair should address.

Surface contamination from oil or chemicals affects adhesion and must be dealt with during preparation. Previous coatings that are peeling or failing need to be reviewed and removed or prepared as needed.
